"Die Deutschen in Rom" ["The Germans in Rome"],
1913
lithograph on chamois-colored Japan, state 3
33 x 46 cm (image)
lower right in pencil signed, inscribed, dated, and numbered: "O. Greiner Rom 18. Febr. 1913"
Vogel 98 III (of III)
Condition: blotchy; handling creases
The person on the left, standing in the background and holding a glass, is the editor and book-seller Otto Dittmann (1856-after 1935); the person sitting in the right foreground and smoking a cigarette is the bookseller Mühl; and the person sitting at the table between them is the bank clerk Ottmar Wilhelm. The wall behind them is blank in the third state of this print, without the death mask of Frederick the Great found in the second state. Most of the impressions of this print are of the second state (with the desk mask); the third state (without the mask) was printed in a smaller number.
